Vertigo & Balance

Physiotherapy can play an important role in the assessment and treatment of vertigo and balance problems, particularly when symptoms are related to inner ear issues, neck dysfunction, or postural imbalances.

Common types of vertigo that may respond well to physiotherapy include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), caused by small crystals in the inner ear shifting out of place
  • Vestibular hypofunction, where the inner ear balance system is underactive or impaired
  • Cervicogenic dizziness, where neck joint or muscle problems affect balance and spatial orientation

Following a thorough assessment, physiotherapy treatment may include hands-on techniques such as canal repositioning manoeuvres (E.g. Epley or Semont manoeuvres), joint mobilisations to the neck and soft tissue releases. Treatment may also involve balance retraining, gaze stabilisation exercises, posture correction, and strategies to manage symptoms safely during daily activities.

By addressing the underlying causes of vertigo, physiotherapy aims to reduce dizziness, improve balance, and help prevent symptoms from returning.

If you experience dizziness, spinning sensations, or balance difficulties, book an appointment with our physiotherapy team for a comprehensive assessment and personalised treatment plan.
